The NDA (National Defence Academy) exam syllabus for 2024 is divided into two main sections: Mathematics and the General Ability Test (GAT). The exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and is the gateway for admission into the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force wings of the NDA.
1. Mathematics

- Types of matrices, operations on matrices, determinant of a matrix, properties of determinants, application of determinants to solve a system of linear equations.
- Trigonometry:
- Angles and their measurements, trigonometric ratios, trigonometric identities, properties of triangles, solution of trigonometric equations.
- Analytical Geometry of Two and Three Dimensions:
- Rectangular Cartesian coordinate system, distance formula, equation of a line, angle between two lines, distance of a point from a line.
- Standard forms of parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola. Equation of a circle.
- Three-dimensional space, distance between two points, direction cosines and direction ratios, equation of a plane and a line.
- Differential Calculus:
- Concept of a real-valued function, domain, range, composite functions, limits, continuity, differentiation, application of derivatives.
- Integral Calculus and Differential Equations:
- Integration as an inverse of differentiation, standard integrals, properties of definite integrals.
- Formation of differential equations, general and particular solution, first-order differential equations.
- Vector Algebra:
- Vectors in two and three dimensions, magnitude and direction of a vector, unit and null vectors, addition of vectors, scalar multiplication, scalar product, and vector product.
- Statistics and Probability:
- Classification of data, frequency distribution, measures of central tendency, variance, and standard deviation.
- Probability concepts, Bayes’ theorem, random variables, and probability distributions.
2. General Ability Test (GAT)
The GAT section is divided into two parts: English and General Knowledge.
Part A: English
- Grammar and Usage:
- Spotting errors, correcting sentences, fill in the blanks (verbs, prepositions, articles, etc.), vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, comprehension, and sentence rearrangement.
- Comprehension:
- Understanding of English passages, testing comprehension skills and drawing inferences.
- Vocabulary:
- Testing the candidate’s ability to use words precisely and understand the meaning of words and phrases.
- Cohesion:
- Questions to test the candidate’s ability to connect different parts of a sentence logically.
Part B: General Knowledge
This section is further divided into six subsections:
- Physics:
- Basic concepts of physics including motion, force, energy, gravitation, properties of matter, sound, light, electricity and magnetism, heat, and thermodynamics.
- Simple experiments and practical-based questions.
- Chemistry:
- Physical and chemical changes, elements, compounds, mixtures, acids, bases, salts, oxidation and reduction, atomic structure, bonding, periodic table, chemical equations, and reactions.
- Environmental chemistry and its applications.
- General Science:
- Human body and health, basic biology, genetics, physiology, evolution, plant and animal kingdoms, diseases, and nutrition.
- Environmental science, food chains, and food webs.
- History:
- Indian history from ancient to modern times, significant events, movements, and leaders.
- Freedom movement, post-independence consolidation, and reorganization of states.
- World history focusing on the Industrial Revolution, World Wars, and major events.
- Geography:
- Earth’s structure, physical geography, climate, weather, natural resources, and human geography.
- Geographic locations, important seas, rivers, mountains, and strategic regions.
- Indian geography including the physical features of India, climate, vegetation, and population.
- Current Events:
- Awareness of current national and international events, sports, awards, scientific advancements, and important developments in India and the world.
- Knowledge of prominent personalities in various fields such as politics, sports, arts, and science.
